Step 2: Prepare for Anmeldung / Meldeamt Registration
Complete residence registration — foundational step unlocking most subsequent procedures.

Germany (Anmeldung at Buergeramt):
- Book online at city's Buergeramt site (Berlin: service.berlin.de; Munich: muenchen.de/rathaus; others: city site)
- No appointments? Try walk-in hours (Buergeramt ohne Termin) or smaller satellite offices

If fail: Common rejection reasons and fixes:
- Missing Wohnungsgeberbestaetigung: Contact landlord immediately
- Landlord refuses to sign: Illegal in Germany (Section 19 BMG); cite law, request compliance; last resort, inform Buergeramt
- No appointments: Try neighboring districts, early walk-in queues, online cancellation waitlists
- Name mismatch passport/lease: Bring extra ID or declaration explaining discrepancy
Step 3: Navigate Tax Registration
Set up tax ID and where applicable select tax class or arrange withholding.

- After Anmeldung, Steuer-ID auto-generated and mailed within 2-4 weeks

Pitfalls

- Assuming employer handles everything: Employers do payroll registration, social security, sometimes health insurance; residence registration, bank accounts, broadcasting fees, most other steps are your responsibility
- Forgetting church tax opt-out in Germany: Many newcomers don't realize declaring religion during Anmeldung triggers auto Kirchensteuer (8-9% of income tax)
- Delaying bank account opening: Without local account, salary, rent direct debit, premium payment all problematic; open within first week
